This month we are spotlighting two books that I enjoyed over the past few months --- THE LANGUAGE OF LIGHT by Meg Waite Clayton and THE DEATH AND LIFE OF CHARLIE ST. CLOUD by Ben Sherwood.
Nelly, the protagonist in THE LANGUAGE OF LIGHT, moves back to horse country in Maryland with her two small boys after the death of her husband. There she pursues her dream of becoming a photojournalist, like her father. Nelly learns a lot about her father --- and the world she knew when she was growing up, which was not all as she remembered. The imagery and metaphor of light in this book was so well done --- a great topic for discussion.
THE DEATH AND LIFE OF CHARLIE ST. CLOUD will make you think about your own feelings about life after death. Charlie stops living when his brother dies in a tragic accident. It takes a woman to show him how to live again --- and love. The discussions about this book can go so many ways, which is why I liked it.
Both of these authors are available for groups to chat with. See details below.
Between THE DA VINCI CODE and THE PASSION, people have been discussing religion and religious figures like never before this year. A book we want to have on your radar screens is MARY, CALLED MAGDALENE, a historical fiction title by Margaret George. For those of you who want to explore this figure in religious history, this is a book you will want to read.
A couple of very interesting stats. More than 99,000 unique visitors (you only count once each month) logged onto ReadingGroupGuides.com in February. That's a lot of you for one short month! Also, more than 13,362 people went to see the guide for ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE, the new Oprah pick, and 8,008 of people looked at THE DA VINCI CODE guide. That's a lot of readers! Also, we learned that there are over 2,000,000 copies in print of another title book clubs love, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES. Please see our poll, which asks what books you are reading, or plan to read with your group.
And may we suggest you try some of the lesser-known titles below --- with your group, or just for your reading pleasure. We love introducing you to new books --- and authors.
Speaking of which...one of the authors in the Invite the Author program is Marian Keyes. I had the pleasure of meeting her when she was in the States in January. Her book party for her book UNDER THE DUVET was in a hotel suite where she greeted us in PJs. It was great --- and from this meeting I saw a lot of her charm and can see why groups would love to chat with her.
Have a great month.

THE DEATH AND LIFE OF CHARLIE ST. CLOUD by Ben Sherwood |
Ben Sherwood brings us the unforgettable story of Charlie St. Cloud, who survived a tragic accident that would make him see the world in a whole new way. Though his little brother Sam did not live through the horrific collision one moonlit night, Charlie has discovered a miraculous way to keep him close. Then Charlie meets Tess, a woman so beautiful and fearless that she makes him yearn to embrace the land of the living once again. But she doesn't realize she's in terrible jeopardy, facing impossible dangers that only Charlie can help her defeat. With a love that transcends everything you may have believed about life and death, Charlie embarks on a spellbinding adventure to save her, and revive his own heart as well.
Ben Sherwood is available to speak with book clubs in person or by speakerphone about his work. Details can be found online at BenSherwood.com |

MARY, CALLED MAGDALENE |
Weaving together hints from the New Testament, Gnostic gospels, and other ancient texts, Mary Called Magdalene portrays the life of the mysterious figure of Mary Magdalene, "Apostle to the Apostles," and companion to Jesus. Here Margaret George creates a new portrait of one of the most controversial figures in biblical scholarship: a strong, independent woman, given to visions and gifted with a unique faith in Jesus and his message.
Margaret has a terrific photo gallery at her website, MargaretGeorge.com where she has pictures she took during her research. |
