Ready for Great Discussions in 2025!
We recently have added a number of new subscribers, so we wanted to take a moment to welcome you to the ReadingGroupGuides.com newsletter!
Happy New Year! I know we are supposed to stop saying that around January 6th. But since this is our first newsletter of the year, I am making an exception.
I have read a number of January books that all would make for great discussions. And looking at my shelves of advance reading copies, I am seeing dozens more coming out later this year.
We are planning book group events, as well as lots of author interviews, to ensure that we provide you with plenty of options for bookish conversation and background on the books that you will be discussing. On that note…
This is your last Reading Group Guides newsletter reminder to sign up for our first “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event of the year, which will take place on Wednesday, January 29th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Ashley Elston, and she will be talking about her #1 New York Times bestseller, FIRST LIE WINS, a Reese’s Book Club pick and a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection that releases in paperback on January 28th. Evie Porter has everything a nice Southern girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence, a tight group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you have a question for Ashley, please email it to me using the subject line “Ashley” by January 29th at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Ashley the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Ashley in our virtual green room before the program starts.
This also is your last Reading Group Guides newsletter reminder to sign up for our special Winter Preview evening event, which we are hosting on Wednesday, January 22nd at 8pm ET.
I will be presenting a number of books releasing this winter that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. Included will be fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction. You can register for the program by clicking here. We have a stellar lineup of titles, and I look forward to telling you all about them!
We are happy to share with you our first two “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews of 2025.
First up is Fiona Davis, whose latest novel is THE STOLEN QUEEN. This Bets On pick is set in Egypt in 1936 and New York City in 1978 --- and the iconic New York building that is featured here is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Fiona and I talk about the museum's King Tut exhibit, as well as the Met Gala and how it has changed through the years. And yes, we share an admiration for fashion columnist and editor Diana Vreeland. Fiona also reveals many details about her research, and she notes a book for further reading. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. Also, be sure to check out the discussion guide and our Bookreporter review.
Speaking of Fiona, a few months ago, she shared some exciting news on social media: “Earlier this year, Corinne Horowitz Levine from the travel agency Novel Travels reached out to me. She wanted to put together a tour of the New York City locations featured in my books. I thought it was a great idea, and now it's ready for lift off. It includes five days in late March 2025 in the Big Apple, one Broadway show, two hangs with yours truly, and the chance to hit all the hot spots of my novels in the hands of a professional tour guide.”
This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans of Fiona to meet her and “walk the pages of her novels,” while spending five fun days (March 27-31) in New York City. Click here for the full itinerary. And for more information, be sure to reach out to Corinne at [email protected], or call 561-596-6960.
I also had the pleasure of talking to Lisa Genova about her new work of fiction, MORE OR LESS MADDY, which will be a Bets On selection.
Lisa shares what drew her to write about a young woman with bipolar disorder and her research on the subject, which included conversations with people who have been diagnosed with it. She talks about how both the diagnosis and the treatment of bipolar disorder can be challenging; there is no one way to treat it, and treatment takes time.
Maddy longs to be a stand-up comedian, and Lisa explains how she learned more about that topic, including her own set on stage to give it a try. As always, Lisa speaks about wanting to have readers leave her books with empathy and understanding. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. You also can read our review on Bookreporter here, and don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
THE STOLEN QUEEN and MORE OR LESS MADDY are just two of the prizes in our End-of-the-Year contest, which we’re keeping open through the end of the month. We’re giving readers the opportunity to share their favorite book that they read with their group and their favorite book that they read outside their group in 2024.
One Grand Prize winner will be awarded THE STOLEN QUEEN and MORE OR LESS MADDY, along with five other books releasing this year that we think will make for terrific book group discussions: THE FLOAT TEST by Lynn Steger Strong, A FORTY YEAR KISS by Nickolas Butler, GOOD DIRT by Charmaine Wilkerson, PRESUMED GUILTY by Scott Turow, and THE QUEENS OF CRIME by Marie Benedict.
To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, January 29th at noon ET. We will share our reader-compiled "Best Of" list with you in the next newsletter.
Last Year’s Most Popular Discussion Guides
Our Most Requested Guides of 2024 are now available. We pulled together the 30 guides that were accessed the most by you last year. In the top five are THE WOMEN by Kristin Hannah, THE FROZEN RIVER by Ariel Lawhon, DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver, HELLO BEAUTIFUL by Ann Napolitano, and HORSE by Geraldine Brooks. We always love seeing which guides appealed to you the most!
Oprah’s latest Book Club pick is A NEW EARTH: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, which was originally published in 2005 and was selected for the Book Club in 2008. With his bestselling spiritual guide, THE POWER OF NOW, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived “in the now.” In A NEW EARTH, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.
Oprah says, “As we welcome a new year, I wanted to revisit the book that had more effect on me than any other book by a living author has had on my perception of how I understand my connection to the world. It changed the way I looked at pain in my life, it changed the way I looked at ego in my life, it changed the way I looked at the roles I played in my life versus the values that I hold for myself. I already had a life’s purpose in 2008, but it enhanced the purpose that I was living here on earth and I know it can do it for everyone who reads it.”
Oprah talked to Eckhart Tolle about A NEW EARTH and its vital lessons for 2025 in front of a live audience at the Starbucks Reserve store in New York's Empire State Building. Click here to watch their conversation on Oprah’s YouTube channel. You can access the guide here.
THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE COMMON OCTOPUS by Emma Knight is January’s Barnes & Noble and “Read with Jenna” book club picks. This much-talked-about novel --- which revolves around campus life, sexual awakening, and the many ways that women can become mothers in this world --- asks to what extent we need to look back in order to move forward.
Jenna says, “This is a book about friendship, motherhood and finding ourselves with mystery and romance at its core. This debut novel will sweep you up your feet.” On Tuesday, February 4th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Emma, which you can sign up for here. In the meantime, here’s the guide.
HOMESEEKING is January’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. Debut novelist Karissa Chen’s meticulously researched and deeply personal literary debut illuminates the grand scope of the Chinese diaspora through the intimate story of Haiwen and Suchi, childhood best friends turned star-crossed soulmates, and their 60-year journey back to each other.
With dual timelines, Chen carries the reader through the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, crisscrossing Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New York City and Los Angeles, all while navigating the themes of love, migration and the immigrant experience. Click here for the guide.
For more January selections, including the Indie Next and LibraryReads lists, see our “Favorite Monthly Lists & Picks” feature here.
We also have added guides for these two books:
-
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE McCRAYS?: Full of love and hope, Tracey Lange’s new novel --- an upcoming Bets On title --- takes an intimate look at both sides of a failed marriage and two people who finally must confront the awful pain of their past or risk being consumed by it. We will feature my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter, along with my interview with Tracey.
-
RENTAL HOUSE: Weike Wang, the award-winning author of CHEMISTRY and JOAN IS OKAY, is back with a witty, incisive and tender novel about a marriage as seen through the lens of two family vacations. In her Bookreporter review, Norah Piehl calls the book “funny in a peculiar, truly unexpected way. In the end, it offers a unique vision of what it might take for this couple to manage a future that could work for both of them --- and their respective families.”

As promised, there is lots going on. My group is meeting on Tuesday night, and we'll be sharing what we read over the break. We decided to do this so there wouldn't be one more assigned task over the holidays.
We love hearing from readers about the prizes that they win on Reading Group Guides. Thank you and the publisher again for your generosity! Happy reading from snowy St. Louis!”
And on that note, enjoy your next book group discussion!

THE NOTE by Alafair Burke (Psychological Thriller)
In THE NOTE by Alafair Burke, three friends have decamped to a stunning place in the Hamptons for a reunion visit. It all sounds idyllic, but this is a thriller, so don’t settle back in your chair and relax.
Lauren, Kelsey and May have not seen each other in a while. But it quickly becomes clear that had they not attended the same camp in the past, they probably would not be in each other’s lives. They were close at one time, but we don’t know exactly why they’re spending time together now. Is it to share memories, or something else? Each has a history that is carefully parsed to readers, as something scandalous or embarrassing has happened to them. They know some of each other’s secrets, but not all of them.
