Our 13th Annual Book Group Speed Dating Event is Now Available for Viewing!
Earlier this month, we hosted our 13th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians, book club leaders and bloggers. Representatives from six publishers presented 30 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between now and October. You can watch the event here --- and if you would like to hear from a specific publisher, we have included timestamps for each of them.
To learn more about the books, click here to access a PDF of the PowerPoint presentation of the featured titles, as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the books both by publisher and alphabetically by title, along with a sheet to take notes.
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Tuesday, June 25th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be William Kent Krueger, and he will be talking about his New York Times bestseller, THE RIVER WE REMEMBER, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. In 1958, a small Minnesota town is rocked by a shocking murder, pouring fresh fuel on old grievances.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you have a question for Kent, please email it to me using the subject line “Kent” by June 25th at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Kent the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Kent in our virtual green room before the program starts.
Our Summer Preview evening event will take place THIS Thursday, June 20th at 8pm ET, and we hope you can join us for this special program.
I will be presenting a number of books releasing this summer that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. You can register for the event by clicking here. And be sure to share the signup link with others who may be interested in attending. We have a terrific lineup of titles in various genres, and I look forward to telling you all about them!
In anticipation of the July 2nd release of Marjan Kamali’s new novel, THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN, we are giving 25 readers the opportunity to win an advance copy in our Bookreporter contest. This book is a sweeping exploration of how profoundly we are shaped by those we meet when we are young, and the way love and courage transform our lives.
The deadline for your entries is THIS Friday, June 21st at noon ET. Scroll further down the newsletter for all the details. I look forward to interviewing Marjan soon!
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Lisa Wingate, whose latest work of historical fiction, SHELTERWOOD, will be a Bets On selection. Lisa explains the origin of the story, a piece she found about a woman named Kate Barnard that sent her down a rabbit hole of learning more about the children known as “elf children” who lived in trees. They typically were Native American children who were sought after for the land rights that they owned after the Dawes Act went into effect as they were landowners.
Lisa grew up in Eastern Oklahoma where the book is set and shares her history of the area, as well as her love of the Winding Stair Mountains where she frequently hikes. We also talk about shelterwood and the history that we were not really taught in school. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. And don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
In the meantime, you can find the discussion questions here. Also, the publisher put together a terrific book club kit that you won’t want to miss. It features a letter from Lisa, historical documents, and recipes for your book club gathering…including one for Texas Funeral Cake. Sounds intriguing!
I also had the pleasure of speaking with Ruth Reichl about her new work of fiction, THE PARIS NOVEL, a Bets On title for which we featured the guide last month. The concept for this book was born from a section in Ruth’s 2019 memoir, SAVE ME THE PLUMS, which prompted her longtime editor, Susan Kamil, to ask for a novel with that as a starting-off point.
Ruth talks about why she set the book in the 1980s, as travel then was so different from what it is now. Yes, she dined at all the places mentioned in the book and remarks that she is surprised that more has not been written about Shakespeare and Company, and the Tumbleweeds who lived there. She also shares something personal from her childhood that influenced how she created the character of Stella. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
This month, we are featuring the guide for the national bestseller, THE FALL OF ROE: The Rise of a New America, by acclaimed New York Times journalists Elizabeth Dias and Lisa Lerer.
In June 2022, Americans watched in shock as the Supreme Court reversed one of the nation’s landmark rulings. For nearly a half-century, Roe v. Wade was synonymous with women’s rights and freedoms. Then, suddenly, it was gone. In their groundbreaking book, Dias and Lerer reveal the explosive inside story of how it happened. Their investigation charts the shocking political and religious campaign to take down abortion rights and remake American families, womanhood and the nation itself. In doing so, they go beyond the traditional political narrative into the most personal reaches of American life.

It was announced last week that FAMILIARIS by David Wroblewski is the latest Oprah’s Book Club selection. This long-awaited follow-up to THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE (which was an Oprah’s Book Club pick when it released in 2008) is the stirring origin story of the Sawtelle family and the remarkable dogs that carry the Sawtelle name.
Oprah says, “I’m delighted for us to dive into an epic novel from the tremendously talented bestselling author…. David takes us on an extraordinary journey that brilliantly interweaves history, philosophy, adventure, and mysticism to explore the meaning of love, friendship, and living your life’s true purpose.”
Wroblewski appeared on “CBS Mornings” last week to talk about the book and his reaction to now being an author of TWO Oprah’s Book Club picks. Click here to watch the segment. If you’d like to read along with Oprah’s Book Club, you can do so by following the schedule here.
