Last Thursday night, I went to an event that Allison Pataki was doing for her latest historical novel, FINDING MARGARET FULLER. The book is an epic reimagining of the life of Margaret Fuller --- America’s forgotten leading lady and the central figure of the Transcendentalist movement. What amazes me about Allison’s work is not just her writing, which always draws me in, but her ability to introduce me to a woman in history who I feel like I should know about. And I wonder why I did not.
I was able to see many authors who I have not had a chance to see in person over the last few years. Between 2020 and 2024, there was not a whole lot of socializing. When you think about it, it’s like we skipped the amount of time that you were in high school or college. That gives you an idea of how long it’s been.
For the record, I knew nothing about Margaret Fuller. But when I heard about her contemporaries --- Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, etc. --- I wish I had remembered more about the books that I had read in high school and college. I feel like a book group could spend a year reading Allison's book --- and then works by Margaret’s contemporaries. Consider this an idea that you can share! In the meantime, you can click here for the discussion guide and here for our review on Bookreporter.
Allison’s talk was moderated by Fiona Davis, who did a terrific job of keeping the conversation going. Both Allison and Fiona have spoken to my book group. I met with my group two nights before the event, and we were trying to select our next book to read. One title that we were considering was THE MATCHMAKER’S GIFT by Lynda Cohen Loigman, which Julia in our group is passionate about. I saw Lynda that evening and told her that we were choosing our next title that night, and hers was in the running. She said that if we picked it, she would Zoom with us. You can guess what happened next. That was the book we selected, and we arranged for Lynda to join us in late April. I love when things like this happen.
Oh, and FINDING MARGARET FULLER is the PBS Books Readers Club selection for March and the latest pick for the CBS New York Book Club with Mary Calvi. Click on each of the links to watch interviews with Allison. I look forward to finishing the book and hope to talk to her in the weeks ahead!
On Thursday, I learned that THE WOMEN by Kristin Hannah sold 1,000,000 copies in its first seven weeks of being on sale. At a time when romantasy books (those that combine romance and fantasy) have been dominating sales, it’s interesting to see a book grab attention like this --- and hold on to it.
My book group read THE WOMEN this month, and it was one of those meetings where everyone had read the book. We talked about how we never thought about women and the war, how we needed reminders about how horrifically soldiers were treated upon their return, and yes, once again, how Kristin had written a book that made them sad. There was also a lot of discussion about Frankie and the men in her life. Those who were not able to make the meeting asked if we could talk about it again with them next month, which we will plan to do after we chat with Lynda.
In this newsletter, we are featuring the guide for Lisa Scottoline’s newly released domestic thriller, THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEVLINS, along with our review on Bookreporter.
Here’s the premise: TJ Devlin is the charming disappointment in the prominent Devlin family, all of whom are lawyers at their highly successful firm --- except him. After a stint in prison and rehab for alcoholism, TJ can’t get hired anywhere except at the firm as an investigator. But one night, TJ’s world turns upside down after his older brother, John, confesses that he murdered one of their clients, an accountant he’d confronted with proof of embezzlement. TJ plunges into the investigation, but it isn’t long before he and John find themselves entangled in a lethal web of deception and murder.
As I’m sure most of you know, Lisa loves book clubs and is grateful to those who choose to talk about her books. So as a way to honor and thank them, she has created two special opportunities to join her in virtual discussions of THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEVLINS. Click here for all the details!
Lisa has been on the road this week --- with stops in Pennsylvania, Florida, Arizona, Texas and New Jersey --- to talk about the book. Her tour continues through mid-April (with a couple of virtual events sprinkled in), so be sure to check out her schedule here to see if she’ll be at a bookstore or library near you.
Being single is like playing the lottery. There’s always the chance that with one piece of paper you could win it all. That’s the tantalizing tagline to Rebecca Serle’s latest novel, EXPIRATION DATES, which will be an Indie Next pick for April. This gripping, emotional, passionate and heartbreaking novel is about what it means to be single, what it means to find love, and ultimately how we define each of them for ourselves. Click here for the guide and here for our Bookreporter review.
THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS is the latest thriller from Chris Bohjalian, who many of you know as the author of such bestsellers as THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT and THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS. In this twisting tale of organized crime, cryptocurrency and family secrets on the Las Vegas strip, a Princess Diana impersonator and her estranged sister find themselves drawn into a dangerous game of money and murder.
On Bookreporter, we have two reviews of the book from our reviewers Roberta O’Hara and Ray Palen, who are huge fans of Bohjalian’s work. Roberta says, “Bohjalian excels at creating flawed and pained women, with histories that are often shocking and always revelatory. Betsy and Crissy are in the tradition of some of his best female protagonists.... Bohjalian never fails to deliver a winner. THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS is exactly that.” And according to Ray, the book “satisfies on so many levels and shows once again that Bohjalian is a writer worth following no matter what he produces.”
Also, be sure to take a look at the guide and an interview that Roberta conducted with Bohjalian.
Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest
You have until Wednesday, April 10th at noon ET to enter our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. Three groups will win up to 12 copies of HOMECOMING by Kate Morton, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that releases in paperback on Tuesday. The novel begins with a shocking crime, the effects of which echo across continents and generations. This was one of my three favorite books of 2023, and I highly recommend it. I love the way Kate wove a book within a book.
Here’s what our Bookreporter reviewer Kate Ayers said about HOMECOMING in her rave review last year after the hardcover came out: “Kate Morton sets a scene like no other writer in modern literature.... Every time Morton brings us into a town, a house or a store, it’s as if we’re there…. HOMECOMING challenges readers to figure out who was involved in the deaths of four people. And it goes beyond that: Would you have done the same? Would you forgive? Would you understand? Once again, Morton proves why she’s hailed as one of the best.”
As we announced in the last newsletter, Kate Morton will be joining us for our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event on Wednesday, April 24th at 8pm ET. I will be talking to her about HOMECOMING, and readers will have the opportunity to ask her questions about the book, either on or off camera. Click here for all the details and to sign up for what promises to be a fabulous evening. Kate lives in Australia, and I am thrilled that we are going to be able to share this discussion with our readers.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Anna Quindlen, whose new novel, AFTER ANNIE, is March’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick.
The idea for the opening of the book came to Anna in a moment, which she explains. She thought for a while about just writing from the point of view of Ali, Annie’s 13-year-old daughter, but she changed her mind as she realized that she could not see the complete purview of a person that age. Instead, she layered in Annie’s husband, Bill, and her best friend, Annemarie, to give readers a fuller picture of the impact of Annie’s life even after her death.
Annie, and what she thinks, is alive on every page. Surprisingly, AFTER ANNIE was not always the title, and the cover was not an immediate choice either. Anna also talks about what she does every day when she ends a writing session. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
We also have added guides for these three books:

EVERYONE IS WATCHING: In Heather Gudenkauf’s twisty new thriller, five contestants have been chosen to compete for $10 million on a game show that will be live-streamed for all the world to see. But they have no idea what to expect when they arrive at the secluded estate where the competition will take place. When long-kept secrets begin to rise to the surface, the contestants realize that someone is out for blood.
-
HOW TO SOLVE YOUR OWN MURDER: Kristen Perrin’s adult debut, which will appeal to fans of Knives Out and THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB, is the Top LibraryReads Pick for March. After a fortune teller tells Frances that she will be killed, she spends the rest of her life trying to dodge her fate. But when she is murdered 60 years later, it’s suddenly up to her great-niece-turned-sleuth to catch the killer or risk losing Frances’ sprawling estate.
-
THE DIVORCÉES: Set at a 1950s Reno "divorce ranch," Rowan Beaird’s much-talked-about debut novel is about the complex friendship between two women who dare to imagine a different future. Lauren Groff calls the book “gorgeously crafted, perfectly balanced, and full of complex, moving and vividly wrought characters. The sunshot pool at the Golden Yarrow, the searing desert heat, the dark glamour of the casinos will stay with me for a long time.” I feel like this is the perfect beach book for anyone headed out on spring break.
Last Wednesday night, we hosted a special “Bookaccino Live” Spring Preview evening program. I presented 55 books that are either out now or soon to be released this spring that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. Included are fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction. Click here to watch the event and here to see a list of the titles that I talked about. We are planning to do a Summer Preview evening program in June!

THE LAST MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD by Stuart Turton (Literary Mystery)
Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.
Outside the island, there is nothing. The world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.
On the island, it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists are living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists.
Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn't solved within 107 hours, the fog will smother the island --- and everyone on it.
But the security system also has wiped everyone's memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer --- and they don't even know it.
And the clock is ticking.
