Earlier this month, my book group had our last outdoor meeting on my deck, unless the weather warms up again. As we met, we also selected our next two books. For November, it’s THE PARIS DAUGHTER by Kristin Harmel; for December, it's THE SPECTACULAR by Fiona Davis. The latter was selected as a holiday homage to the Rockettes.
We also would like to do something festive for December. If you have any great holiday tie-in ideas, send them my way, and we will share them in the next newsletter. Please use the subject line “Holiday” in your email so I am sure to see it.
Lisa Hickman, our Contest Coordinator, recently got together with her book group, the Stone Harbor Yacht Club. They talked about Liz Nugent’s latest novel, STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND, which was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection when it released this summer. For those of you who have not considered a thriller before, note that it was a huge success. Here’s a report from Lisa about their last meeting of the year as they meet seasonally.
“We had a GREAT discussion. There were 28 people there, and EVERYONE commented on how skillful Liz’s writing was. When you turned the page, you had NO idea what was going to happen next, and you just couldn't put the book down. The ‘Bookreporter Talks To’ interview with Carol and Liz really made our end-of-the-year book club! The group loved hearing about the UK version vs. the US version, and that Liz had to read an extra chapter for the US audio version. It was probably the best discussion we've had in the last few months, and we've had some really good ones. Wine and a cheese board were provided by the club to celebrate our end of the season. AND it’s a perfect read for October and Halloween!”
I am thrilled to announce that our first-ever LIVE “Bookreporter Talks To” interview will take place TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 18th at 1pm ET.
Our guest will be William Kent Krueger, who will be talking about his latest novel, THE RIVER WE REMEMBER, and answering questions from those who won a copy of the book in a Bookreporter contest we ran over the summer. We have a number of readers who will be asking their question on camera, and I’ll be asking questions on behalf of our readers who are camera-shy or are unable to join us live.
We also thought it would be fun to open this up to a wider group so they can listen in on the interview. So if you’d like to attend, you can sign up by clicking here. Kent is very excited about this event, as we all are, and we hope to see many of you there!
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which is scheduled for next Wednesday, October 25th at 8pm ET.
Our guests will be Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan, and they will be talking about their book, MAD HONEY. Now available in paperback, this Bets On pick is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.
My book group discussed MAD HONEY last year, and it was one of our best discussions. We explored so many issues as we read it.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Jodi and Jennifer a question about the book on camera during the event and chat with them in our virtual green room before the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Honey” by October 25th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
We will be hosting our 12 ½ Annual Book Group Speed Dating event on Friday, November 3rd at 1pm ET. If you are a librarian, bookseller or book club leader of three or more groups, and would be interested in attending this event, please email me and tell me a bit about yourself using the subject line “Speed Dating.” This is a “trade only” event, but we will be sharing the publisher videos, PowerPoint slides and other materials with you later in November.
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Jean Kwok, whose new novel, THE LEFTOVER WOMAN, will be a Bets On selection. We are featuring the discussion guide this month, along with our review on Bookreporter.
In this book, Jasmine Yang has given birth to a girl. But with China's One Child Policy in place, her husband tells her that the baby died and instead arranges for an adoption to take place in the US. He wants to have a son as his one child. The baby is adopted by Rebecca Whitney, who works at a publishing company. Here, Jean offers a fun "inside baseball" look at publishing, along with the story of the adopted girl.
Jasmine comes to New York undocumented seeking to reunite with her daughter. Jean explains that coming to a new country like Jasmine does is hard and that she must live under the radar to support herself. She also talks about those "from home" who have touchpoints with you that are special. And she shares how her own upbringing as the youngest in a family of seven found its way into this story. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
I enjoyed catching up with Thrity Umrigar about her new novel, THE MUSEUM OF FAILURES. It’s a Bets On title, as was her previous book, HONOR.
Remy Wadia has come back to India from his home in Columbus, Ohio, to adopt a baby. His friends know a young woman who is pregnant and wants to give up her child. Remy is conflicted about this trip as he has had a long, contentious relationship with his mother, and this is his first time back in India since the death of his father, who was his champion. He and his dad shared a warm, loving relationship. His mom is colder and more guarded with him.
Thrity talks about her plotting and the building of her characters, as well as the multiple references to “the museum of failures” in the book. Like Remy, Thrity is Parsi, part of a very small sect, and she delves into their history. There is also a discussion about how infrequently many Americans contemplate the nuances of the larger world, and how little is taught in school about much of it. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
I also had the pleasure of interviewing Jean and Thrity together at the Morristown Festival of Books earlier this month for a panel called “Missing Family and Buried Secrets,” which also included Claire Jiménez, the author of WHAT HAPPENED TO RUTHY RAMIREZ. Be sure to check out the Bookreporter Weekly Update newsletter here for all the festival coverage and the other panels I moderated.
Our Latest Monthly Contest is Live!
Our new “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest book is the national bestseller SIGNAL FIRES by Dani Shapiro, which releases in paperback on October 24th. Along with being a Bets On selection, it was a TIME Best Fiction Book of the Year, a Washington Post Notable Work of Fiction, and the winner of the National Jewish Book Award.
Here’s the premise: An ancient majestic oak stands beneath the stars on Division Street. Under the tree sits Ben Wilf, a retired doctor, and 10-year-old Waldo Shenkman, who is pointing out his favorite constellations. Waldo doesn’t realize it, but he and Ben have met before. And they will again, and again. Across time and space, and shared destiny. Division Street is full of secrets. An impulsive lie begets a secret --- one that will forever haunt the Wilf family. And the Shenkmans, who move into the neighborhood many years later, bring secrets of their own.
Three groups will win 12 paperback copies of SIGNAL FIRES. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, November 8th at noon ET.
Our Most Popular Book Group Selections from September’s Contest
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently by book groups that they have read: DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver, LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by Bonnie Garmus, HELLO BEAUTIFUL by Ann Napolitano, REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt, and THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in THE INTERN, Michele Campbell’s timely thriller about class, ambition, family and murder. As these women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?
According to our Bookreporter reviewer Rebecca Munro, “THE INTERN is completely engrossing, highly readable and totally compelling. The characters…are cleverly crafted, and the implications of their moral standings and dubious choices layer poignant questions about class and ambition on this already gripping story. Michele Campbell has penned the perfect up-past-your-bedtime thriller.” Click here for the full review and here for the guide. Michele does such a great job with this book; I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We also have added guides for these five books:
-
DEATH VALLEY: Melissa Broder’s latest novel, which is October’s #1 Indie Next pick, is a comedic odyssey through the desert of grief --- and an exploration of the rich oases we may discover in that arid landscape.
-
THE LIST: Multi-award-winning journalist and bestselling author Yomi Adegoke’s debut novel is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. Here, a high-profile female journalist’s world is upended when her fiancé’s name turns up in a viral social media post.
-
THE PROSPECTORS: October’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick is a sweeping rags-to-riches story of survival and greed across American history, in which a family is transformed by the Klondike Gold Rush. On Tuesday, November 14th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with the author, Ariel Djanikian, which you can sign up for here.
-
EVERYTHING I LEARNED, I LEARNED IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT: Served up by the cofounder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and structured around the very menu that graced the tables of Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine, Curtis Chin’s memoir tells the story of his time growing up as a gay Chinese American kid in 1980s Detroit.
-
WHAT WE KEPT TO OURSELVES: Nancy Jooyoun Kim, who wrote the Reese’s Book Club pick THE LAST STORY OF MINA LEE, is back with the story of one unforgettable family’s search for home when all seems lost. It’s also a powerful meditation on identity, migration and what it means to dream in America.
Safiya Sinclair’s much-buzzed-about memoir, HOW TO SAY BABYLON, is this month’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick. Here, she tells the stunning story of her struggle to break free of her rigid Rastafarian upbringing, ruled by her father’s strict patriarchal views and repressive control of her childhood, to find her own voice as a woman and poet. Jenna calls it “a book about freedom, choice, becoming who we're meant to be,” but it's also about “family and a mom's devotion.” Click here to read our Bookreporter review.
Reese’s Book Club pick for this month is Alix E. Harrow’s latest novel, STARLING HOUSE, a modern gothic fantasy that is perfect for this spooky time of year. As Reese says, “This book has everything you could possibly want this fall: a cursed town, a haunted house, a vivid and eerie setting --- plus characters willing to risk everything.” Be sure to check out our review on Bookreporter here.

Out on the sun-scorched trail, the woman encounters a towering cactus whose size and shape mean it should not exist in California. Yet the cactus is there, with a gash through its side that beckons like a familiar door. So she enters it. New Guide: EVERYTHING I LEARNED, I LEARNED
IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT by Curtis Chin
EVERYTHING I LEARNED, I LEARNED IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT: A Memoir by Curtis Chin (Memoir)
1980s Detroit was a volatile place to live, but above the fray stood a safe haven: Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine, where anyone --- from the city’s first Black mayor to the local drag queens, from a big-time Hollywood star to elderly Jewish couples --- could sit down for a warm, home-cooked meal. Here was where, beneath a bright-red awning and surrounded by his multigenerational family, filmmaker and activist Curtis Chin came of age; where he learned to embrace his identity as a gay ABC, or American-born Chinese; where he navigated the divided city’s spiraling misfortunes; and where he realized just how much he had to offer to the world, to his beloved family and to himself.

BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN by Jessica Knoll
Our Most Popular Book Group Selections for September's "What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?" Contest
Bookreporter.com Bets On:
BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN by Jessica Knoll
and THE MUSEUM OF FAILURES by Thrity Umrigar
BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN by Jessica Knoll (Psychological Thriller)
Jessica Knoll’s BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN brilliantly looks at an unnamed serial killer who we will recognize as the man who murdered two young women and seriously hurt two more in a horrific crime spree at a sorority house in Tallahassee in 1978. I remember this real-life incident so well, as I was in college at the time and thought how completely terrifying that situation had to be. This was the same person who had been on the prowl in the Seattle area before making his way to Colorado, where he killed and then escaped from prison twice. Along the way, at least 20 women were murdered, but the number could have totaled as many as 100.

He is married and living in Ohio with his American wife, Kathy. Life there is full and brilliant, and he has a loving relationship with her family. But they both long for a child, and the opportunity to adopt an Indian baby has been shared with Remy's good friends in India.
