Even though no one at our house has headed back to school in years, there is something about September that still has a feeling of settling into the back-to-school routine. Last week, my social media feeds were filled with “first day of school” photos, where students were in their specially selected outfits, and the younger ones were holding chalkboards with everything from what grade they were entering to their future career choices. And from there, the routines picked back up, and the unscheduled days of summer were backburnered.
For those of you whose book groups had a summer hiatus, it’s meeting time again. It's your turn to get back to the adult version of “required reading.”
And, as always, we have a great selection of titles for you to consider for both your upcoming book group discussions and other pleasure reading. Oh, and since many of you enjoy watching or listening to an author interview before your group meets, I wanted to share that our amazing Editorial Director, Tom Donadio, has created a list of all the author interviews that we have done to date, listed alphabetically by author. You can find it here.
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Wednesday, September 27th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Alice Elliott Dark, and she will be talking about her novel, FELLOWSHIP POINT, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. Set across the arc of the 20th century, it’s the story of a lifelong friendship between two very different women with shared histories, divisive loyalties, hidden sorrows and 80 years of summers on a pristine point of land on the coast of Maine.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Alice a question about the book on camera during the event and chat with her in our virtual green room before the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Alice” by September 27th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
We have THREE new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Angie Kim, whose new novel, HAPPINESS FALLS, is September's Barnes & Noble Book Club selection, "Good Morning America" Book Club pick, and an upcoming Bets On title. It’s a family story with a mystery woven through. Much of the book revolves around 14-year-old Eugene, who has Angelman syndrome, and what he may know about the disappearance of his father.
Angie talks about how long this story was in her head (more than a decade) and why she felt that this was the right time to tell it. She notes that she aimed to look at the impact of someone who is verbally disabled on the entire family. And she wanted to address how those who are different may be in jeopardy when being looked at by law enforcement as they would not be attuned to things like Eugene’s jumping to calm himself or the verbal noises he makes. These cues could keep someone who is disabled from protecting themselves.
Angie also discusses her creative writing work with students who have issues with oral communication and shares how the person who performs Eugene’s part for the audiobook was hand-selected by her from among this group. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. My Bets On commentary will appear in the next newsletter. In the meantime, be sure to take a look at the discussion guide and our review on Bookreporter.
On Tuesday, October 3rd at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Angie. She will be joined in the discussion by Shannon DeVito, the Sr. Director of Book Strategy and Customer Experience at B&N, and Miwa Messer, the Executive Producer and host of B&N's “Poured Over” podcast. Click here to sign up.
Next up is Melanie Benjamin, whose new work of historical fiction is CALIFORNIA GOLDEN. Set in Southern California in the 1950s and '60s, the story is built around Carol --- a prize-winning surfer at a time when women were not big contenders in the sport --- and her two daughters, Mindy and Ginger.
Melanie discusses the structure of the book with the daughters’ story coming first, then the mother’s, and finally all of them together. She also delves into how the lives of women have changed over the past decades, as well as her research on surfing and life during these times in California and Hawaii. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We featured the guide in the last newsletter, along with our Bookreporter review.
I also had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah Pekkanen about her new thriller, GONE TONIGHT, which is a Bets On pick. In this mother/daughter story, a mother will do anything she can to keep her daughter, who is now in her 20s, safe and living near her. She had her daughter as a teen and has been long estranged from her family. The book is told from the points of view of both the mother and the daughter.
Sarah talks about ratcheting up the tension while also doing a slow reveal. Parts of the book take place in a memory care unit, and she explains how her earlier experience as a reporter helped her in developing character and setting background. Sarah also discusses lasagna pizza, which figures into the storytelling. And she shares a few hints about her next book, which will be in stores next summer. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. You may remember last month we featured the guide and our review from Bookreporter.
Our Latest Monthly Contest is Live!
Our new “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest book is MAD HONEY by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan, a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick and a Bets On title that released in paperback last week. My book group had a fabulous discussion about the book earlier this year. I think it was one of our best ones yet.
Here’s the premise: Olivia McAfee’s life was upended when her husband revealed a darker side, and now she is back in her New Hampshire hometown with her son, Asher. Meanwhile, Lily Campanello and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school. It isn't long before Asher and Lily fall in love with each other. But then one day, Olivia receives shocking news: Lily has been found dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police.
Three groups will win 12 paperback copies of MAD HONEY. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, October 11th at noon ET.
Our Most Popular Book Group Selections from July/August’s Contest
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently by book groups that they have read: THE COVENANT OF WATER by Abraham Verghese, HORSE by Geraldine Brooks, LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by Bonnie Garmus, DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver, and REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
William Kent Krueger’s newly released stand-alone novel, THE RIVER WE REMEMBER, is an Indie Next pick, a Book of the Month Club selection, a Barnes & Noble Most Anticipated Book of September, and an upcoming Bets On title. Set in the summer of 1958, the plot revolves around long-held secrets and prejudices that threaten to rip apart a small Minnesota community following the murder of the county’s leading citizen. But the themes of the novel run deeper, touching on the wounds that war delivers to the human spirit and the question of how we heal from those wounds.
Along with the guide and our Bookreporter review, we are sharing the wonderful comments we received from 25 readers who won an advance copy of THE RIVER WE REMEMBER in a previous Bookreporter contest. In their feedback, many of them emphasize that it’s the perfect novel for a book group to discuss as it touches on a number of important issues. I so agree! Find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book (as these readers and I did) in the next newsletter.
These readers also submitted questions for Kent, many of which I will be asking him during an upcoming “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. He is currently on an extensive book tour across the country, but we hope to find some time to chat between stops!
THE BREAKAWAY is Jennifer Weiner’s warmhearted and empowering new novel about love, family, friendship, secrets and a life-changing journey. Over two weeks and more than 700 miles, strangers become friends, hidden truths come to light, a teenage girl with a secret unites a group of bike riders in unexpected ways...and main character Abby is forced to reconsider everything she believes about herself, her mother and the nature of love.
Katherine B. Weissman raves about the book in her Bookreporter review: “THE BREAKAWAY…has a lot of good stuff to say about both body image and self-esteem; it’s also replete with mother-daughter epiphanies, hot sex, an eventful bike trip through New York State to Niagara Falls, and... did I mention hot sex?... Strong, sensuous and altogether adorable, [Abby] keeps the bike trip, as well as the novel, in high gear.” Click here for the full review and here for the guide.
AMAZING GRACE ADAMS by debut novelist Fran Littlewood is this month’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick. This funny yet touching story is about an invisible everywoman who is pushed to the brink --- and finally pushes back. Jenna says, “It takes place over one day with a ton of flashbacks, so you see why Grace's life has been shattered. You find out her marriage is falling apart. Her daughter won’t speak to her.” Still, Jenna emphasizes that the book is “wildly funny” in its approach to “dealing with so many of the issues that mothers and wives face mid-age.”
Here's Bookreporter reviewer Norah Piehl’s take on the book: “AMAZING GRACE ADAMS takes readers on an emotional journey. At times, it’s slapstick-level funny, almost absurd in its portrayal of Grace’s comedy of errors, with that 'Love Island' cake in tow. But just when you think this is a lightweight comic novel, Littlewood lets loose not one but several gut punches that make you view Grace’s situation in a whole new heartbreaking light. These twists and turns never feel manipulative --- and they help readers feel like they truly understand this character in a meaningful way.” Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter. I completely agree with Norah’s review!
We also have added guides for these three books:
-
MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT: Nina Simon’s debut novel is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick. Here’s what Reese has to say about the book: “This fun and gripping whodunit follows a grandmother-mother-daughter trio as they try to solve a murder in their coastal town… I just loved how intriguing the mystery was, but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother and a daughter --- a teenage daughter.”
-
LEARNED BY HEART: Emma Donoghue’s latest novel is based on the true story of two girls who fall secretly, deeply and dangerously in love at boarding school in 19th-century York. Full of passion and heartbreak, the tangled lives of Anne Lister and Eliza Raine form a love story for the ages.
-
PLAYING THE WITCH CARD: KJ Dell’Antonia’s debut novel, THE CHICKEN SISTERS, was a Reese’s Book Club pick three years ago. Blending the mother-daughter relationship and witty banter of “Gilmore Girls” with the reluctant witch and family history of Practical Magic, her latest book is about a woman who must reclaim her powers to manifest the life she craves and safeguard those she holds dear from an unforeseen danger.

Shockingly the weather was really nice the last time that my book group met. Mark it down! It was fun to sit poolside and, for some of us, IN the pool on a lovely night. Next up, we are reading THE HOUSEMAID by Freida McFadden. It’s a psychological thriller that one of our group members raved about. As always, we traded book ideas, which is such fun.
Oh, for those of you in the New Jersey area, I am going to be moderating three panels at the Morristown Festival of Books on Saturday, October 7th. More details to come, but watch their site for the upcoming reveal of the complete lineup. It’s always a wonderful program filled with engaged readers.

THE WHISPERS by Ashley Audrain
THE WHISPERS by Ashley Audrain (Domestic Thriller)
A couple of years ago, I read Ashley Audrain’s debut novel, THE PUSH, and joked that I never will look at little pink mittens the same way again. I read THE WHISPERS over our summer holiday break, and once again she has nailed the young mother domestic thriller. It’s set in an upscale neighborhood where there are oversized new houses that were teardowns, as well as original homes that are smaller-sized, all on the same block. Harlow Street is the kind of place where you know your neighbors and socialize with them, then talk about them.
