February 11, 2023 Sparking a DiscussionSince I have been in a book group, I find myself reading every book thinking about whether or not it will spark a discussion. Do the characters, plot and writing work? Or is there a topic that we can talk about beyond what is on the pages? What did I walk away thinking about the book? Do you find yourselves doing the same thing? Let me know! My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Jane Harper. Her new novel, EXILES, wraps up her Aaron Falk trilogy. I loved the book so much that I have made it a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick, and I look forward to catching up on the previous two installments of the series: THE DRY and FORCE OF NATURE. Jane explains why she felt it was time to say goodbye to Falk. The book takes place in a lush area of South Australia, and Jane mentions a trip there that in her mind solidified the book’s setting. She discusses how a sense of place matters to her and addresses our Bookreporter reviewer Katherine B. Weissman’s question about why she may see place differently from someone who has been permanently rooted in Australia. We also talk about the movie adaptation of THE DRY and the one coming up for FORCE OF NATURE, and how similar plans may be forthcoming for EXILES. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Wednesday, February 22nd at 8pm ET. Our guest will be Fiona Davis, and we will be talking about THE MAGNOLIA PALACE, which is now in paperback. This tantalizing novel is about the secrets, betrayal and murder within one of New York City's most impressive Gilded Age mansions. Our Bookreporter reviewer Amy Gwiazdowski says, “If you like a little family drama and a mystery tossed together with a smattering of art history, this is a lovely book to keep you company for a weekend.” You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Fiona a question on camera during the event and chat with her in our virtual green room before the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Magnolia” by Wednesday the 22nd at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state. Our Latest Monthly Contest is Live! Presidents have come and gone, but Marjorie Merriweather Post has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, and later the heiress to the General Foods fortune, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard --- even while covered in imperial diamonds. From crawling through Moscow warehouses to rescuing the Tsar’s treasures to outrunning the Nazis in London, from serving the homeless of the Great Depression to entertaining Roosevelts, Kennedys and Hollywood’s biggest stars, Marjorie lived an epic life few could imagine. And yet her story was equally marked by challenge and tumult. Three groups will win up to 12 paperback copies of THE MAGNIFICENT LIVES OF MARJORIE POST. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, March 8th at noon ET. If you missed my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Allison from last year, you can watch it here or listen to it here. In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently by book groups that they have read: LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by Bonnie Garmus, MAD HONEY by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan, HORSE by Geraldine Brooks, WEST WITH GIRAFFES by Lynda Rutledge, and THE MAID by Nita Prose. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15. Speaking of giveaways, I’d like to tell you about a special contest we have running right now on Bookreporter for THINGS I WISH I TOLD MY MOTHER by Susan Patterson and Susan DiLallo. It’s a really fun book that releases on April 10th and will be a Bets On pick. Here’s the premise: Laurie is an artist and a collector of experiences. She travels the world with a worn beige duffel bag. “Dr. Liz,” Laurie’s mother, is an elegant perfectionist who travels the world with a matched set of suitcases. A dream vacation to Paris will bring an unexpected sparkle to Liz’s eyes. The scenes in Paris, with the meals and the shopping, are wonderful. The meeting of extended family when they head to Norway unpacks some secrets. This is lovely armchair travel. And there’s a twist at the end. We’re awarding an advance copy of the book to 50 readers and giving them the chance to share their comments about it with us. To win means that you are committed to reading THINGS I WISH I TOLD MY MOTHER and giving us your feedback on it by Friday, March 31st. If you can do this, please fill out this form by Friday, February 17th at noon ET. Also, I will be talking to Susan Patterson and Susan DiLallo in April, and the winners will have the option of submitting a question that they would like me to ask them. From all the questions we receive, I will select a few to ask during the interview, which will be available as a video and podcast the week that the book releases. Sadeqa Johnson’s 2021 novel, YELLOW WIFE, followed an enslaved woman who was forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia. It was a Bets On title, and I had the pleasure of interviewing Sadeqa shortly after it released. So I am thrilled to announce that her latest work of historical fiction, THE HOUSE OF EVE, will be a Bets On pick as well. It also is this month’s Reese’s Book Club selection and Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites pick. Here's what Reese has to say about the book: “Set in the 1950s, this unforgettable story follows Ruby, who dreams of being the first in her family to attend college, but her first love may derail her plans. And Eleanor, who marries into one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families but struggles to have a baby --- the thing she wants most. Their lives collide in the most unexpected way.” On Monday, February 27th at 1pm ET, members of the Simon & Schuster team will talk to Sadeqa about THE HOUSE OF EVE. You can RSVP by clicking here. We are featuring the discussion guide in this newsletter and our review on Bookreporter. My Bets On commentary will appear in the late February newsletter, and I will be interviewing Sadeqa again in March. We also have added guides for these four books:

THE MAGNIFICENT LIVES OF MARJORIE POST by Allison Pataki (Historical Fiction)
Marjorie Merriweather Post’s journey began gluing cereal boxes in her father’s barn as a young girl. No one could have predicted that C. W. Post’s Cereal Company would grow into the General Foods empire, with Marjorie as its heiress and leading lady. Not content to stay in her prescribed roles of high-society wife, mother and hostess, Marjorie dared to demand more, making history in the process. Before turning 30, she amassed millions, becoming the wealthiest woman in the United States. But it was her life-force, advocacy, passion and adventurous spirit that led to her stunning legacy. And yet Marjorie’s story, though full of beauty and grandeur, set in the palatial homes she built such as Mar-a-Lago, was equally marked by challenge and tumult. - Click here to read more about the book. - Click here for the discussion guide. - Click here to read an excerpt. - Click here to read our review on Bookreporter.com.

Bookreporter.com Bets On: EXILES by Jane Harper (Mystery/Thriller) Falk has come to a town in Southern Australia for a christening, not on an assignment. It’s an event that was postponed last summer after a young woman, a friend of the family named Kim Gillespie, went missing at the annual wine festival. Her baby daughter, Zoe, was found tucked up in her pram. Since then, her husband, Rohan, has been raising his daughter on his own back in Adelaide. People have been looking for Kim for a year, but nothing has been found except her sneakers near a drop-off to the water on some grounds beyond the festival area --- a place where teens regularly gather to hang out and drink. - Click here to read more about the book.
