September 17, 2022
September 17, 2022 Book FestivalsFall is creeping up on us. But that also means there are a number of great book festivals on the calendar. We try to stay on top of these here, so take a peek to see if any are in your area. In New Jersey, we are lucky enough that the Morristown Festival of Books will be taking place on Saturday, October 8th, with a special opening event featuring New York Times columnist Frank Bruni on the night of Friday, October 7th. I love this festival since it is close to home! I will be interviewing Nita Prose, the author of THE MAID, at 11am, followed by Jamie Fiore Higgins, the author of BULLY MARKET: My Story of Money and Misogyny at Goldman Sachs, at 1:20pm. Both of these books are Bookreporter.com Bets On selections, and I am looking forward to conversations with both of them! The festival has added a very special Closing Event at 5:15pm on the 8th, which is ticketed. The special guest for that is James Patterson, and I am happy to share that I will be interviewing him as well. Check out their website for lots more information about their programming, including their terrific KidFest programs for kids and teens. I also have tentative plans to head to Charleston, South Carolina, for the Charleston Literary Festival the first weekend in November. You can see their festival details; they have a 10-day program here. If you are attending a festival in your area, please let us know if you would like to report on it for us! This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Thursday, September 29th at 8pm ET. Our guests will be Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray, and we will be talking about their instant New York Times bestseller THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN, a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick and a Bets On selection that is now available in paperback. This remarkable novel is about J. P. Morgan’s personal librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, the Black American woman who was forced to hide her true identity and pass as white in order to leave a lasting legacy that enriched our nation. You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Marie and Victoria a question on camera during the event and chat with them in our “backstage green room” before the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Personal Librarian” by Thursday the 29th at noon ET. Those who are camera shy can send their questions via the Q&A feature on Zoom. Our Latest Monthly Contest is Live! CARRIE SOTO IS BACK is the latest novel from Taylor Jenkins Reid, who tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet. Carrie Soto is a legendary tennis player who attempts a comeback against a much younger woman who has threatened her Grand Slam record. I loved the setting of the four majors, and all that happens on and off the court. Taylor was not someone who played or watched a lot of tennis before writing this book, which may be why I loved it so much and made it a Bets On pick. She wrote in a way that made me enjoy not just the plot, but also the tennis. Now I just need Taylor to write a book about golf! Be sure to take a look at the guide, our review on Bookreporter, and my Bets On commentary. Maggie O’Farrell, who many of you know as the author of the New York Times bestseller and National Book Award winner HAMNET, is back with her eagerly awaited new novel, THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT. In 1561, Lucrezia, Duchess of Ferrara, is taken on an unexpected visit to a country villa by her husband, Alfonso. As they sit down to dinner, it occurs to Lucrezia that Alfonso has a sinister purpose in bringing her here. He intends to kill her. What is Lucrezia to do with this sudden knowledge? What chance does she have against Alfonso, ruler of a province and a trained soldier? How can she ensure her survival? Click here for the guide and here for our Bookreporter review. In the last newsletter, I expressed my excitement over the release of the aforementioned BULLY MARKET, a memoir based on Jamie Fiore Higgins’ nearly two-decade career at Goldman Sachs. The book is now in stores, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. Jamie became one of the few women at the highest ranks of Goldman Sachs. Spurred on by the obligation she felt to her working-class immigrant family, she rose through the ranks and saw it all: out-of-control, lavish parties flowing with never-ending drinks; affairs flouted in the office; rampant drug use; and, most pervasively, a discriminatory culture that seemed designed to hold back the few women and people of color employed at the company. You can access the guide here. Also, don’t miss our review on Bookreporter and my Bets On commentary. There is a lot here for book groups to discuss! Our Contest Coordinator, Lisa Hickman, has booked Jamie for the Reeds Book Club meeting in Stone Harbor in October. We also have added guides for these four books:
Oprah’s latest Book Club pick is THAT BIRD HAS MY WINGS by Jarvis Jay Masters, the moving memoir of a Death Row inmate who discovers Buddhism and becomes an inspirational role model for fellow inmates, guards and a growing public. Originally released in 2009, the book has now been reissued with a foreword by spiritual teacher Pema Chödrön, who has long championed Masters’ cause. Oprah says, “Years ago, I was given a memoir by Jarvis Jay Masters. His story, of a young boy victimized by addiction, poverty, violence, the foster care system, and later the justice system, profoundly touched me then, and still does today.” Over the next few weeks, Oprah will discuss the book on the social media platforms of Oprah’s Book Club, followed by a one-on-one interview with Masters from San Quentin. Jenna Bush Hager has selected SOLITO as September’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick. Javier Zamora tells the story of his harrowing migration from El Salvador to the United States at the age of nine. Jenna says, “It was a beautiful book about family, those that we have and those that we make, and the little family that they made on their journey, which was almost sort of ‘Iliad’-esque. An epic journey to their loved ones, because they had no choice.” Click here for our review on Bookreporter. Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly. Long ago, she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena --- a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man --- Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past. While Meena’s fate hangs in the balance, Smita tries in every way she can to right the scales. She also finds herself increasingly drawn to Mohan, an Indian man she meets while on assignment. - Click here to read more about the book. - Click here for the discussion guide. - Click here to read our review on Bookreporter.com.
