Ready for a New Year of Reading!
Happy New Year! Since this is our first newsletter of the year, here’s wishing you all a wonderful year ahead. It was a long and lovely break, but we are so glad to be back in touch with you. We have lots to share.
As promised, our Most Requested Guides of 2019 is now available. We know this is an eagerly anticipated list each year. We pulled together the 30 guides that were accessed the most by you last year. Your top five picks are WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING by Delia Owens (no surprise there), BECOMING by Michelle Obama (no surprise there, either), THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas, FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley, and BENEATH A SCARLET SKY by Mark Sullivan (my mom just discussed this book with her book club last week, and they all loved it). As always, we love seeing which guides appealed to you the most!
Here's a BIG contest for you to enter... Continuing from last month is our special End-of-the-Year contest. By sharing your favorite book that you read with your group in 2019 and your favorite book that you read outside your group, you will be eligible to win six titles releasing this year that are perfect for book group discussions: AMERICAN DIRT by Jeanine Cummins, A GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD by Therese Anne Fowler, LADY CLEMENTINE by Marie Benedict, LONG BRIGHT RIVER by Liz Moore, THE QUEEN'S FORTUNE: A Novel of Desiree, Napoleon, and the Dynasty That Outlasted the Empire by Allison Pataki, and SAINT X by Alexis Schaitkin. The deadline for your entries is Wednesday, February 5th at noon ET. We will share our reader-compiled "Best Of" list with you in the early February newsletter.
We kick off 2020 with an impressive lineup of discussion-worthy books that you may want to consider talking about with your group.
DEAR EDWARD is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club selection, Jenna Bush Hager’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick, and a LibraryReads Top Pick. In Ann Napolitano’s latest novel, a 12-year-old boy struggles with the worst kind of fame --- as the sole survivor of a notorious plane crash. "I choose DEAR EDWARD because it is a book about love and loss and finding your way after the unthinkable," said Jenna. "I thought to start our year off, even though hopefully nothing this dramatic happens in everyone’s life, we can all think about a new lease on life." She went on to say, “It deals with grief and there are definitely sad moments but, ultimately, I found it to be a really hopeful, beautiful book.” We will post discussion questions as soon as they become available. In the meantime, click here for our review on Bookreporter.com.
B&N will be selling a special Exclusive Book Club Edition of DEAR EDWARD, along with hosting a free Book Club Night to discuss it, in stores across the country on Tuesday, February 4th at 7pm local time. Click here to sign up for the event.
Liz Moore’s latest novel, the aforementioned LONG BRIGHT RIVER, is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. The publisher’s blurb teases, “Two sisters travel the same streets, though their lives couldn't be more different. Then one of them goes missing.” Here’s how “GMA” describes the book: “LONG BRIGHT RIVER, which is being compared to the likes of GONE GIRL, is a thrilling and mysterious page-turner set in a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis…. Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters' childhood and adolescence, LONG BRIGHT RIVER is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction, and the formidable ties that persist between place, family, and fate.”
I agree with “GMA’s” take on the novel, which is why I’m making it my first Bookreporter.com Bets On selection of the year. Click here for my commentary. Liz stopped by our office last week for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview as she was in New York City for her book tour. We talked about her inspiration for the book, the origin of the title, the opioid crisis and lots more. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Also, be sure to check out the discussion guide and our Bookreporter review.
Kiley Reid’s novel, SUCH A FUN AGE, is this month’s Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club pick and #1 Indie Next pick. This much-anticipated debut, which you may remember was one of last year’s Book Expo Buzz books, revolves around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both. Reese had this to say about the book: “If one of your New Year Resolutions is to read more books… I have a GREAT one for you! Our January book pick is SUCH A FUN AGE by Kiley Reid. You’ll follow a young woman’s journey of self-discovery after she’s wrongfully accused of kidnapping a child. This story is a beautiful conversation starter about race, privilege, work dynamics… I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!” Click here for the discussion guide and here for our Bookreporter review.
This month, we are featuring guides for two books that are now available in paperback. First up is THE LAST ROMANTICS by Tara Conklin, which was a Bets On pick when it released in hardcover last year. When the renowned poet Fiona Skinner is asked about the inspiration behind her iconic work, The Love Poem, she tells her audience a story about her family and a betrayal that reverberates through time. You can see the guide here, our Bookreporter review here, and my Bets On commentary here.
Our second featured guide (written by Bookreporter reviewer Ray Palen) is for Sarah Pinborough’s psychological thriller, CROSS HER HEART. Lisa lives for her daughter Ava, her job and her best friend Marilyn. But when a handsome client shows an interest in her, Lisa starts daydreaming about sharing her life with him, too. Maybe it's time to let her terrifying secret past go. However, when her daughter rescues a boy from drowning and their pictures are all over the news, Lisa's world explodes. As she finds everything she has built threatened, and not knowing who she can trust, it's up to Lisa to face her past in order to save what she holds dear. Click here for the discussion questions and here for Ray’s review.
Other guides we’ve added to this first update of the year are the aforementioned LADY CLEMENTINE by Marie Benedict, which focuses on one of the people who had the most influence during World War I and World War II: Clementine Churchill; THE DAUGHTER’S TALE, Armando Lucas Correa’s novel (now in paperback) that explores a hidden piece of World War II history and the lengths a mother will go to protect her children; and Yangsze Choo's THE NIGHT TIGER (a Reese Witherspoon pick that’s now in paperback), which is set in 1930s colonial Malaysia and tells the intimate coming-of-age story of a child and a young woman, each searching for their place in a society that would rather they stay invisible.
Longtime readers know how much we love William Kent Krueger at ReadingGroupGuides. When he was in town last month, we recorded an interview with him where we chatted briskly about THIS TENDER LAND, ORDINARY GRACE and his Cork O’Connor series. If you did not have a chance to catch Kent on tour, I think you will enjoy our discussion. Click here to watch the interview and here to listen to the podcast. I do wish we could have done it while traveling down a river!
Towards the end of last year, I chatted with Cara Wall, whose debut novel, THE DEARLY BELOVED, is a Bets On pick, as well as a “Read with Jenna” selection. She shared her thoughts on cultural expression in the '50s and '60s, the controversial topics at the heart of her book, discussions she has had with book clubs, and more. You can watch the video here and listen to the podcast here.
Last week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Allison Pataki about the previously mentioned THE QUEEN’S FORTUNE, which releases on February 11th. Her latest historical novel is all about Desiree Clary, an extraordinary woman who captured Napoleon’s heart, created a dynasty and changed the course of history. I was just as impressed with Allison’s eye for detail as I was with her beautiful prose. We will post this in-depth interview on February 12th.
Because the holidays are such a busy time for so many of us, and groups may not have a formal meeting in December, we decided to extend the deadline for our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. We’re giving three groups the chance to win 12 copies of HOUSE ON FIRE by Bonnie Kistler, a Bets On pick that recently released in paperback. A blended family is in crisis after a drunk driving accident leaves the daughter of one parent dead --- and the son of the other parent charged with manslaughter. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, February 5th at noon ET. In the meantime, may we suggest you take a look at the discussion guide, our review on Bookreporter and my Bets On commentary?
In November and December, we featured a contest that offered 50 book groups the chance to win up to 12 advance digital copies of the audiobook of Therese Anne Fowler's A GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD, read by Adenrele Ojo. The winners have been chosen, and you can see them here. Congratulations to all!
This month’s pick for the PBS NewsHour-New York Times “Now Read This” book club is Terese Marie Mailhot’s memoir, HEART BERRIES, which “traces her family’s history on the Seabird Island Indian Reservation in British Columbia, Canada. Her collected essays address the trauma experienced by indigenous people across generations, as well as the author’s own struggles with mental illness.”
The aforementioned THE DAUGHTER’S TALE by Armando Lucas Correa is January’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites program. S&S will host a Facebook Live Book Club chat about the book on Tuesday, January 28th at 3pm ET. We encourage you to join the conversation with your comments about the novel and interact with your fellow readers. If you missed last month’s discussion, where members of the S&S team talked about their favorite book club reads from last year and shared what they’re excited about reading this year, you can catch it here.
My neighborhood book group discussed two books this month as we did not meet in December: THE STATIONERY SHOP by Marjan Kamali and THE GIFTED SCHOOL by Bruce Holsinger. We had a terrific discussion about both last night. We talked about how what happens in THE GIFTED SCHOOL is something that we could see happening in a town today, given the way parents are so competitive about their children. For THE STATIONERY SHOP, they appreciated the history of Iran in the '50s as it is something they did not know much about. Two of our group members decided to read more about that time. They both disappeared down the Google rabbit hole to learn even more. I love when a book inspires that!
My other book group is discussing THE TESTAMENTS on Monday night, but alas I will be out of town in Baltimore at Winter Institute, the American Booksellers Association’s conference, and then I will swing up through Philadelphia and attend the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting on Saturday. It’s going to be a very busy week, but I welcome the opportunity to meet and hear from dozens of authors.
I love hearing ideas from readers, and here’s one that sounds like fun. Donna from Houston shared a great idea that she and her Lit group did on January 2nd to welcome in the new year: “Some of us will be reading THE SECRETS WE KEPT by Lara Prescott. Some of us will be reading the great DOCTOR ZHIVAGO. Some of us will be watching David Lean’s Academy Award-winning film with a young and gorgeous (be still my heart) Omar Sharif and the luscious (some girls have it all) Julie Christie. And others will be reading LARA by Anna Pasternak (the great-granddaughter of Boris’ sister, Josephine). This book is nonfiction and tells the story of Boris’ muse, Olga. We will have Russian tea and cookies, wear our babushkas, shawls and wooden clogs, and waltz to the fabulous music from the movie. Oh, and by the way, we will be discussing Lara Prescott’s book and the role the US played in its publishing life. What a dynamite way to welcome in a new year!!!”
Want to share something special that your group is doing? I’d love to hear about it. Write me here.
Have a great discussion with your book group! We’re so looking forward to another brilliant year of reading.

New Guide: LONG BRIGHT RIVER by Liz Moore
January’s “Good Morning America” Book Club Pick
and a Bookreporter.com Bets On Selection
LONG BRIGHT RIVER by Liz Moore (Mystery/Thriller)
In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don't speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling.
Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey's district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit --- and her sister --- before it's too late.
Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters' childhood and adolescence, LONG BRIGHT RIVER is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction and the formidable ties that persist between place, family and fate.

New Guide: SUCH A FUN AGE by Kiley Reid
January’s Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine
Book Club Pick
SUCH A FUN AGE by Kiley Reid (Fiction)
Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living showing other women how to do the same. A mother to two small girls, she started out as a blogger and has quickly built herself into a confidence-driven brand. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night. Seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, a security guard at their local high-end supermarket accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make it right.
But Emira herself is aimless, broke and wary of Alix's desire to help. At 25, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other.
With empathy and piercing social commentary, SUCH A FUN AGE explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone "family," the complicated reality of being a grown up, and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

THE LAST ROMANTICS by Tara Conklin
A Bookreporter.com Bets On Pick
Now Available in Paperback
THE LAST ROMANTICS by Tara Conklin (Fiction)
When the renowned poet Fiona Skinner is asked about the inspiration behind her iconic work, The Love Poem, she tells her audience a story about her family and a betrayal that reverberates through time.
It begins in a big yellow house with a funeral, an iron poker, and a brief variation forever known as the Pause: a free and feral summer in a middle-class Connecticut town. Caught between the predictable life they once led and an uncertain future that stretches before them, the Skinner siblings --- fierce Renee, sensitive Caroline, golden boy Joe and watchful Fiona --- emerge from the Pause staunchly loyal and deeply connected. Two decades later, the siblings find themselves once again confronted with a family crisis that tests the strength of these bonds and forces them to question the life choices they’ve made and ask what, exactly, they will do for love.
A novel that pierces the heart and lingers in the mind, THE LAST ROMANTICS is a beautiful meditation on the power of stories --- how they navigate us through difficult times, help us understand the past, and point the way toward our future.

"Bookreporter Talks To" Videos & Podcasts
In late August, we launched “Bookreporter Talks To,” a video and podcast series where we deliver a long-form, in-depth author interview every week. For years, I have moderated book festivals and author events around the country. But we know that readers often do not live where they can attend an author event. Our goal --- to bring these author interviews to readers, wherever they may be. Watch on video, or listen as a podcast. (The podcasts include audio excerpts.)
By the way, this follows a long history of The Book Report Network delivering compelling programming to readers. Back in 1997, the company hosted the first online interview with John Grisham, which started a tradition of ongoing interviews with authors.
Authors interviewed to date include:
Upcoming interviews include:
-
Jesse Kornbluth (JFK AND MARY MEYER: A Love Story)
-
Allison Pataki (THE QUEEN'S FORTUNE: A Novel of Desiree, Napoleon, and the Dynasty That Outlasted the Empire)
-
Amanda Eyre Ward (THE JETSETTERS)
