In one of our two new "Bookreporter Talks To" interviews, Carol is in conversation with Mary Beth Keane
about her latest book, ASK AGAIN, YES, a Bets On pick and this year's "Tonight Show" Summer Read.
Click on the image above to watch the interview.
Our other "Bookreporter Talks To" interview features Shari Lapena, whose new domestic thriller, SOMEONE WE KNOW, is now in stores and will be a Bets On pick.
Take a look at the interview by clicking on the image above.
Our reader Jani is part of a book group that began online in 1997 after 22 of them had read the first three books in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Recently a few of them got together for Outlander-inspired tea. Above you can see how the table was set for this fun mini-gathering.
Books to Movies Can Keep You Cool on Hot Days
Last month, we talked about innovative things that book clubs may do during the summer to allow for thinking outside the box. Jani shared this: “In 1997, 22 of us who had read the first three Outlander books met online, and for many years afterward, we had gatherings all over the U.S. We had a mini-gathering in Western New York this weekend and had Outlander-inspired tea on Friday.” Above you can see a lovely picture of how the table was set for their special tea party.
I have a few other ideas. If you are in a summer vacation frame of mind, pick a state you have wanted to visit and read a book set there.
Also, there will be some outstanding book-to-screen adaptations perfect for book groups heading to a theater near you over these next couple of months. Three standouts in particular are The Art of Racing in the Rain (releasing August 9th), Where’d You Go, Bernadette (August 16th) and The Goldfinch (September 13th). Scroll further down the newsletter for more info on these movies, including links to the official movie trailers, and the discussion guides and reviews for the books on which they are based. Read and discuss now, and view the movie later! Plus, given our recent heat waves, remember that movie theaters are cool!
As part of our expansion plans for The Book Report Network, we have been shooting a lot of videos. Last week, we shared my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Mary Beth Keane, the author of ASK AGAIN, YES, which is Jimmy Fallon’s "Tonight Show" Summer Reads pick. You can see that interview here. For the record, it does make me a tad crazy when celebrities tout their book clubs. But the reality is, if we can get people reading like this, I am ALL for it. Mary Beth will be on "The Tonight Show" on Thursday, August 15th.
I interviewed Shari Lapena a couple of weeks ago for the “Bookreporter Talks To” series. As her new domestic thriller, SOMEONE WE KNOW, was published just this week, I’m excited to share the video of our discussion, which you can watch here. You can see a special treat that I shared with her as we sat down to talk.
Recently, I chatted with Fiona Davis about her latest work of historical fiction, THE CHELSEA GIRLS, and her other books, including THE MASTERPIECE (which we're continuing to feature and is now in paperback). We’re planning to post that interview next week.
You can subscribe to our YouTube channel here, so you never miss an interview. Both SOMEONE WE KNOW and THE CHELSEA GIRLS will be Bookreporter.com Bets On selections.
Joshilyn Jackson’s latest thriller, NEVER HAVE I EVER (soon to be a Bets On pick), introduces readers to Amy Whey, whose satisfyingly ordinary life is majorly disrupted by the appearance of Angelica Roux on her doorstep. Roux tells Amy that if she doesn’t give her what she asks for, she’s going to make Amy pay for her sins. To protect herself and her family, and save the life she’s built, Amy must beat this she-devil at her own clever game, matching wits with Roux in an escalating war of hidden pasts and unearthed secrets. We’re featuring a discussion guide for the book, which you can see here, along with our interview with Joshilyn.
Our review will run in this Friday’s Bookreporter Weekly Update newsletter, and my Bets On commentary will appear in the August 9th Bookreporter newsletter.
You only have until Wednesday, August 7th at noon ET to enter our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, where three groups will win 12 copies of SOMEONE KNOWS for their group. Lisa Scottoline’s novel, now available in paperback, is a deeply emotional examination of family, marriage and the true nature of justice. Be sure to fill out the form on this page, and then check out the discussion guide and our Bookreporter review.
Along with the aforementioned SOMEONE WE KNOW and THE CHELSEA GIRLS, we are featuring the guide for Beatriz Williams' World War II novel, THE GOLDEN HOUR (an upcoming Bets On pick), in which a beautiful young “society reporter” is sent to the Bahamas, a haven of spies, traitors, and the infamous Duke and Duchess of Windsor. We also have added the guide for THE LAGER QUEEN OF MINNESOTA, J. Ryan Stradal’s novel of family, Midwestern values, hard work, fate and the secrets of making a world-class beer (his debut, KITCHENS OF THE GREAT MIDWEST, was a New York Times bestseller).
A reminder that on Tuesday, August 13th at 7pm local time, Barnes & Noble will be hosting a free Book Club Night in stores across the country for Colson Whitehead’s new novel, THE NICKEL BOYS. If you’d like to attend, all you have to do is sign up here. In the meantime, click here to read our review on Bookreporter. I am trying to guess what their August selection is going to be! Any guesses?
For their August pick, the PBS NewsHour-New York Times “Now Read This” book club asked LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE author Celeste Ng to choose a book that she loves and keeps returning to, and recommend it for all of us to read. Her selection is THE WOMAN WARRIOR: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. This 1976 memoir by Maxine Hong Kingston has become a classic in its innovative portrayal of multiple and intersecting identities --- immigrant, female, Chinese, American.
On Monday, three members of the Simon & Schuster team hosted a Facebook Live Book Club chat to talk about ONCE UPON A RIVER by Diane Setterfield, July’s pick for their Book Club Favorites program, which you can see here. As they wrapped up their discussion, they announced that next month’s selection will be WATCHING YOU by Lisa Jewell, which will be available in paperback on August 6th and was a Bets On pick when it released in hardcover at the end of last year.
We will be back with our next newsletter the week of August 12th.
Stay cool, and enjoy your summer discussions!

NEVER HAVE I EVER by Joshilyn Jackson (Thriller)
Amy Whey is proud of her ordinary life and the simple pleasures that come with it --- teaching diving lessons, baking cookies for new neighbors, helping her best friend, Charlotte, run their local book club. Her greatest joy is her family: her devoted professor husband, her spirited 15-year-old stepdaughter, her adorable infant son. And, of course, the steadfast and supportive Charlotte. But Amy’s sweet, uncomplicated life begins to unravel when the mysterious and alluring Angelica Roux arrives on her doorstep one book club night.
Sultry and magnetic, Roux beguiles the group with her feral charm. She keeps the wine flowing and lures them into a game of spilling secrets. Everyone thinks it’s naughty, harmless fun. Only Amy knows better. Something wicked has come her way --- a she-devil in a pricey red sports car who seems to know the terrible truth about who she is and what she once did.
When they’re alone, Roux tells her that if she doesn’t give her what she asks for, what she deserves, she’s going to make Amy pay for her sins. One way or another.
To protect herself and her family, and save the life she’s built, Amy must beat the devil at her own clever game, matching wits with Roux in an escalating war of hidden pasts and unearthed secrets. Amy knows the consequences if she can’t beat Roux. What terrifies her is everything she could lose if she wins.
A diabolically entertaining tale of betrayal, deception, temptation and love --- filled with dark twists leavened by Joshilyn Jackson’s trademark humor --- NEVER HAVE I EVER explores what happens when the transgressions of our past come back with a vengeance.

SOMEONE KNOWS by Lisa Scottoline (Psychological Thriller)
Allie Garvey is heading home to the funeral of a childhood friend. Allie is not only grief-stricken, she's full of dread. Because going home means seeing the other two people with whom she shares an unbearable secret.
Twenty years prior, a horrific incident shattered the lives of five teenagers, including Allie. Drinking and partying in the woods, they played a dangerous prank that went tragically wrong, turning deadly. The teenagers kept what happened a secret, believing that getting caught would be the worst thing that could happen. But time has taught Allie otherwise. Not getting caught was far worse.
Allie has been haunted for two decades by what she and the others did, and by the fact that she never told a soul. The dark secret has eaten away at her, distancing her from everyone she loves, including her husband. Because she wasn't punished by the law, Allie has punished herself, and it's a life sentence.
Now, Allie stands on the precipice of losing everything. She's ready for a reckoning, determined to learn how the prank went so horribly wrong. She digs to unearth the truth, but she reaches a shocking conclusion that she never saw coming --- and neither will the reader.
A deeply emotional examination of family, marriage and the true nature of justice, SOMEONE KNOWS is Lisa Scottoline's most powerful novel to date. Startling, page-turning, and with an ending that's impossible to forget, this is a tour de force by a beloved author at the top of her game.

And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? New Guide: THE CHELSEA GIRLS by Fiona Davis
An Upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
THE CHELSEA GIRLS by Fiona Davis (Historical Fiction)
From the dramatic redbrick facade to the sweeping staircase dripping with art, the Chelsea Hotel has long been New York City's creative oasis for the many artists, writers, musicians, actors, filmmakers and poets who have called it home --- a scene playwright Hazel Riley and actress Maxine Mead are determined to use to their advantage. Yet they soon discover that the greatest obstacle to putting up a show on Broadway has nothing to do with their art, and everything to do with politics.
A Red scare is sweeping across America, and Senator Joseph McCarthy has started a witch hunt for Communists, with those in the entertainment industry in the crosshairs. As the pressure builds to name names, it is more than Hazel and Maxine's Broadway dreams that may suffer as they grapple with the terrible consequences, but also their livelihood, their friendship and even their freedom.
Spanning from the 1940s to the 1960s, THE CHELSEA GIRLS deftly pulls back the curtain on the desperate political pressures of McCarthyism, the complicated bonds of female friendship, and the siren call of the uninhibited Chelsea Hotel.
THE CHELSEA GIRLS will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Don't miss Carol's commentary in the August 9th Bookreporter.com Weekly Update newsletter.

An Upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
THE GOLDEN HOUR by Beatriz Williams (Historical Fiction)
The Bahamas, 1941. Newly widowed Leonora “Lulu” Randolph arrives in the Bahamas to investigate the Governor and his wife for a New York society magazine. After all, American readers have an insatiable appetite for news of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, that glamorous couple whose love affair nearly brought the British monarchy to its knees five years earlier. What more intriguing backdrop for their romance than a wartime Caribbean paradise, a colonial playground for kingpins of ill-gotten empires?
Or so Lulu imagines. But as she infiltrates the Duke and Duchess’s social circle, and the powerful cabal that controls the islands’ political and financial affairs, she uncovers evidence that beneath the glister of Wallis and Edward’s marriage lies an ugly --- and even treasonous --- reality. In fact, Windsor-era Nassau seethes with spies, financial swindles and racial tension, and in the middle of it all stands Benedict Thorpe: a scientist of tremendous charm and murky national loyalties. Inevitably, the willful and wounded Lulu falls in love.
Then Nassau’s wealthiest man is murdered in one of the most notorious cases of the century, and the resulting coverup reeks of royal privilege. Benedict Thorpe disappears without a trace, and Lulu embarks on a journey to London and beyond to unpick Thorpe’s complicated family history: a fateful love affair, a wartime tragedy and a mother from whom all joy is stolen.
The stories of two unforgettable women thread together in this extraordinary epic of espionage, sacrifice, human love and human courage, set against a shocking true crime...and the rise and fall of a legendary royal couple.
THE GOLDEN HOUR will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Don't miss Carol's commentary in an upcoming newsletter.

Featured Guide: THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis
A Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
Now Available in Paperback
THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis (Historical Fiction)
For most New Yorkers, Grand Central Terminal is a crown jewel, a masterpiece of design. But for Clara Darden and Virginia Clay, it represents something quite different.
For Clara, the terminal is the stepping stone to her future. It is 1928, and Clara is teaching at the lauded Grand Central School of Art. Though not even the prestige of the school can override the public's disdain for a "woman artist," fiery Clara is single-minded in her quest to achieve every creative success --- even while juggling the affections of two very different men. But she and her bohemian friends have no idea that they'll soon be blindsided by the looming Great Depression...and that even poverty and hunger will do little to prepare Clara for the greater tragedy yet to come.
By 1974, the terminal has declined almost as sharply as Virginia Clay's life. Dilapidated and dangerous, Grand Central is at the center of a fierce lawsuit: Is the once-grand building a landmark to be preserved, or a cancer to be demolished? For Virginia, it is simply her last resort. Recently divorced, she has just accepted a job in the information booth in order to support herself and her college-age daughter, Ruby. But when Virginia stumbles upon an abandoned art school within the terminal and discovers a striking watercolor, her eyes are opened to the elegance beneath the decay. She embarks on a quest to find the artist of the unsigned masterpiece --- an impassioned chase that draws Virginia not only into the battle to save Grand Central but deep into the mystery of Clara Darden, the famed 1920s illustrator who disappeared from history in 1931.

Introducing the Kesslers: Marty, a retired LA film producer whose self-worth has been eroded by age and a late-in-life passion for opioids; his daughter Janine, a former child star suffering the aftereffects of a life in the public eye; and granddaughter Hailey, the "less-than" twin sister, whose inferiority complex takes a most unexpected turn. Nearly 6,000 miles away, in London, celebrated author Bunny Small, Marty's long-forgotten first wife, has her own problems: a "preposterous" case of writer's block, a monstrous drinking habit, and a son who has fled halfway around the world to escape her.
When Marty's pill-popping gets out of hand and Bunny's boozing reaches crisis proportions, a perfect storm of dysfunction brings them all together at Directions, Malibu's most exclusive and absurd rehab center.
But for all their failings, the members of this estranged --- and strange --- family love each other. Rich with warmth, humor and deep insight, THERE'S A WORD FOR THAT is a comic ode to surviving the people closest to us, navigating the perils of success, and taking one last look in the rearview mirror before mapping out the road ahead.
