Carol's young moms book group recently discussed MRS. EVERYTHING by Jennifer Weiner,
which was last month's Barnes & Noble Book Club selection.
Carol is listening to and enjoying Richard Russo's CHANCES ARE..., read by Fred Sanders,
which releases on July 30th.
On Monday, July 29th at 5pm ET, members of the Simon & Schuster team will host a
Facebook Live Book Club chat to discuss ONCE UPON A RIVER by Diane Setterfield,
July's pick for S&S's Book Club Favorites program.
Summertime Means Breaking Away from the Norm
Summer book group meetings often take on a lighter tone. Some members are traveling, and others are tugged away by family obligations. My young moms book group met the other night, and we discussed MRS. EVERYTHING by Jennifer Weiner. We typically meet in a firehouse; this means that no one has to cook or clean, which is lovely. Last month, the air conditioning at the firehouse was broken (it’s since been repaired), and we decided to take our discussion to a member’s home for each of the summer months for a change of pace. Julia was a lovely hostess; she also is an amazing baker and always makes a wonderful creation inspired by the book or its setting. She went for something with cherries here as MRS. EVERYTHING opens in Detroit, and her research noted that Michigan is known for its cherries. Just fabulous!
MRS. EVERYTHING was June's Barnes & Noble Book Club selection. Melanie, who edits our Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio features on Bookreporter.com, attended the discussion in Boynton Beach, Florida, where there were about 16 people in attendance. She shared, “We had a good discussion about the themes of being true to yourself, dreams coming true, how it was easier to be gay/a single mother at the end of the book than at the beginning. It was pleasant and a good group discussion.”
Amusingly, Jennifer Weiner posted on Facebook that her mom, Fran, went to one of the discussions. Jen has not been shy about sharing that MRS. EVERYTHING is loosely based on her mom's life. Fran went incognito to a B&N in Farmington, Connecticut, and told Jen that there was one man, two women her age, and "a girl about your age" (Jen is 49). Jen goes on to say, “[O]ne woman didn't like that I got some of the music references wrong (I know! We're fixing it!). But that everyone had their own memories of the 1960s and the 1970s, and what it was like to live through the turmoil of that era, from the Vietnam war to the race riots and the civil rights movement. She said everyone had a lot of sympathy for Jo, who couldn't be herself...and I asked 'Did you ever tell them who you were?' She did not. She was just another woman who showed up to talk about the book.”
For the record, I think that if I wrote a book, my mother and father would be at the discussion, but I DO think they would identify themselves, especially if they liked it. But then again, I am too busy writing newsletters to write a book. They do share the newsletters with their friends!
Next month, I am hosting the group at my house to discuss ORDINARY GRACE by William Kent Krueger. I am hoping that the night will be lovely enough for us to sit poolside. Instead of straightening the house, I will weed the yard. (The weeds are growing marvelously this summer.) Julia is already plotting what to make; since the book is set in Minnesota, I look forward to seeing what she comes up with.
If your group has done anything special thematically with food or drink for your meetings, we would love to know about it! Also, if you have broken with tradition for the summer, tell us about that as well.
By the way, we have heard from a few groups that won THIS TENDER LAND, and they are giving it raves. We will have more to share about this in our August newsletter. For those who have not read ORDINARY GRACE, I highly recommend it --- and you will want to plan to pencil in THIS TENDER LAND for fall; it releases on September 3rd.
My neighborhood book group is reading SEARCHING FOR SYLVIE LEE by Jean Kwok. We are not meeting until early August, as we could not come up with a July date that worked for everyone. We have been emailing furiously about what we are reading beyond our “required” book.
I was telling them that I was weeding while listening to an early copy of Richard Russo’s CHANCES ARE..., which is coming out on July 30th. The chore was a lot less onerous with a good book to listen to. I also did some water aerobics last weekend while listening to the book. I ran so much as I was listening that I think I have shin splints. I forgot that I have water shoes somewhere that are better for water running. I am going to be sure that my waterproof Garmin is secured to my wrist next time I do this to record every step. I feel these days that if it’s not recorded, I did not really take the steps. I know, silly of me, but gauging what I do really gives me a feeling of accomplishment.
I am looking forward to getting back to CHANCES ARE..., which is narrated by Fred Sanders. I am loving the storyline of three men who were in college together in the '60s meeting up again decades later when they are all 66 years old to reminisce and talk about a young woman who they knew decades before and who disappeared back in 1971 when they were all on the island. I love Russo's storytelling.
Our latest “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest title is SOMEONE KNOWS by Lisa Scottoline, which releases in paperback on July 30th. Twenty years ago, a horrific incident shattered the lives of five teenagers. They kept what happened a secret, believing that getting caught would be the worst thing that could happen. But one of them, Allie Garvey, has been haunted by what she and the others did, and by the fact that she never told anyone. Now, two decades later, she digs to unearth the truth, but reaches a shocking conclusion that she never saw coming.
Three groups will win 12 copies of SOMEONE KNOWS; to enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, August 7th at noon ET. In the meantime, be sure to check out the discussion guide and our review on Bookreporter. I really enjoyed this book, and I love the cover!
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING by Delia Owens, EDUCATED: A Memoir by Tara Westover, BEFORE WE WERE YOURS by Lisa Wingate, LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng, and A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW by Amor Towles. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
This month, we’re featuring guides for Karen Dukess’ debut, THE LAST BOOK PARTY, a brisk summer read set in the publishing world of 1980s New York and the timeless beaches of Cape Cod (click here for my Bookreporter Bets On commentary); THE MASTERPIECE (now available in paperback and also a Bets On selection), in which Fiona Davis takes readers into the glamorous lost art school within Grand Central Terminal, where two very different women, 50 years apart, strive to make their mark on a world set against them; and THERE’S A WORD FOR THAT, Sloane Tanen’s hilarious and moving chronicle of a wildly flawed family that comes together --- in rehab, of all places --- even as each member is on the verge of falling apart. For readers who have been asking for funny books, the latter does have a family that will inspire humor with their flaws.
We’ve also added the guide for WHISPER NETWORK by Chandler Baker, which is July’s Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club pick. According to Reese, the book is "honest, timely and completely thrilling --- I was so surprised to find out who the murderer was!" I listened to the audio version, and I agree with Reese’s assessment --- you really don’t know the whole story until the very end. Find out more about the book and why I loved it so much in my Bets On commentary here.
In other news related to book club picks, it was announced this week that THE NICKEL BOYS is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club selection. Colson Whitehead’s follow-up to his Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD recounts the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. Barnes & Noble will be selling a special Exclusive Book Club Edition of the novel, along with hosting a free Book Club Night to discuss it, in stores across the country on Tuesday, August 13th at 7pm local time. Click here to sign up for the event.
EVVIE DRAKE STARTS OVER is Jenna Bush Hager’s #ReadWithJenna book club selection for July. "I was captivated by Evvie Drake right away," said Jenna. "By the character of Evvie --- and her predicament of finding herself as a young widow and trying to find herself after being in this marriage and being in this relationship since high school." Click here for more of Jenna’s thoughts on Linda Holmes’ much-talked-about debut novel, which we reviewed here on Bookreporter.
This month’s pick for the PBS NewsHour-New York Times “Now Read This” book club is THE HOUSE OF BROKEN ANGELS by Luis Alberto Urrea, which we reviewed last year on Bookreporter.
As we announced last month, ONCE UPON A RIVER by Diane Setterfield (which is now in paperback) is July’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites program. S&S will host a Facebook Live Book Club chat about the book on Monday, July 29th at 5pm ET. We encourage you to join the conversation with your comments about the novel and interact with your fellow readers.
S&S is also hosting a sweepstakes where one winner will be awarded 12 copies of ONCE UPON A RIVER for their book group, along with a $100 Wine.com gift card (books and wine…the perfect combo!). Be sure to enter by 11:59pm ET on Wednesday, July 31st. Click here for all the details.
Over on Bookreporter, we’re giving 25 readers the opportunity to win a copy of NEVER HAVE I EVER by Joshilyn Jackson, an upcoming Bets On pick releasing on July 30th, in our Suspense/Thriller Author Spotlight & Contest. In this twisting novel of domestic suspense, a group of women play a harmless drinking game that escalates into a war of dark pasts. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, July 25th at noon ET. We will have much more on this book in our next newsletter as we will be featuring a discussion guide for it.
Meanwhile, our Bookreporter Summer Reading contests are still going on, and there are some terrific books being given away in our 24-hour contests.
Have a great discussion if you are meeting this month...and if you are not, read something to share with your group when you convene again.

SOMEONE KNOWS by Lisa Scottoline (Psychological Thriller)
Allie Garvey is heading home to the funeral of a childhood friend. Allie is not only grief-stricken, she's full of dread. Because going home means seeing the other two people with whom she shares an unbearable secret.
Twenty years prior, a horrific incident shattered the lives of five teenagers, including Allie. Drinking and partying in the woods, they played a dangerous prank that went tragically wrong, turning deadly. The teenagers kept what happened a secret, believing that getting caught would be the worst thing that could happen. But time has taught Allie otherwise. Not getting caught was far worse.
Allie has been haunted for two decades by what she and the others did, and by the fact that she never told a soul. The dark secret has eaten away at her, distancing her from everyone she loves, including her husband. Because she wasn't punished by the law, Allie has punished herself, and it's a life sentence.
Now, Allie stands on the precipice of losing everything. She's ready for a reckoning, determined to learn how the prank went so horribly wrong. She digs to unearth the truth, but she reaches a shocking conclusion that she never saw coming --- and neither will the reader.
A deeply emotional examination of family, marriage and the true nature of justice, SOMEONE KNOWS is Lisa Scottoline's most powerful novel to date. Startling, page-turning, and with an ending that's impossible to forget, this is a tour de force by a beloved author at the top of her game.

New Featured Guide: THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis A Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
Now Available in Paperback
THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis (Historical Fiction)
For most New Yorkers, Grand Central Terminal is a crown jewel, a masterpiece of design. But for Clara Darden and Virginia Clay, it represents something quite different.
For Clara, the terminal is the stepping stone to her future. It is 1928, and Clara is teaching at the lauded Grand Central School of Art. Though not even the prestige of the school can override the public's disdain for a "woman artist," fiery Clara is single-minded in her quest to achieve every creative success --- even while juggling the affections of two very different men. But she and her bohemian friends have no idea that they'll soon be blindsided by the looming Great Depression...and that even poverty and hunger will do little to prepare Clara for the greater tragedy yet to come.
By 1974, the terminal has declined almost as sharply as Virginia Clay's life. Dilapidated and dangerous, Grand Central is at the center of a fierce lawsuit: Is the once-grand building a landmark to be preserved, or a cancer to be demolished? For Virginia, it is simply her last resort. Recently divorced, she has just accepted a job in the information booth in order to support herself and her college-age daughter, Ruby. But when Virginia stumbles upon an abandoned art school within the terminal and discovers a striking watercolor, her eyes are opened to the elegance beneath the decay. She embarks on a quest to find the artist of the unsigned masterpiece --- an impassioned chase that draws Virginia not only into the battle to save Grand Central but deep into the mystery of Clara Darden, the famed 1920s illustrator who disappeared from history in 1931.

THERE’S A WORD FOR THAT by Sloane Tanen (Fiction/Humor)
Introducing the Kesslers: Marty, a retired LA film producer whose self-worth has been eroded by age and a late-in-life passion for opioids; his daughter Janine, a former child star suffering the aftereffects of a life in the public eye; and granddaughter Hailey, the "less-than" twin sister, whose inferiority complex takes a most unexpected turn. Nearly 6,000 miles away, in London, celebrated author Bunny Small, Marty's long-forgotten first wife, has her own problems: a "preposterous" case of writer's block, a monstrous drinking habit, and a son who has fled halfway around the world to escape her.
When Marty's pill-popping gets out of hand and Bunny's boozing reaches crisis proportions, a perfect storm of dysfunction brings them all together at Directions, Malibu's most exclusive and absurd rehab center.
But for all their failings, the members of this estranged --- and strange --- family love each other. Rich with warmth, humor and deep insight, THERE'S A WORD FOR THAT is a comic ode to surviving the people closest to us, navigating the perils of success, and taking one last look in the rearview mirror before mapping out the road ahead.

SIX Recent Bookreporter.com Bets On Selections
WHISPER NETWORK (Audiobook) by Chandler Baker (Mystery/Thriller)
I had seen lots of buzz about WHISPER NETWORK by Chandler Baker. So I quickly grabbed the audiobook, which is narrated by Almarie Guerra, and found it to be one really well-done listen. The book is set at a sportswear company called Truviv, where three women --- Sloane, Ardie and Grace --- have worked for years. The man in line to become the company’s new CEO following the sudden death of his predecessor is Ames Garrett, who women in the company had identified as “trouble.” No, it’s not about his business dealings, but rather about his “women dealings.”

GIRLS LIKE US by Cristina Alger (Psychological Thriller/Mystery)
Last summer, I read THE BANKER’S WIFE by Cristina Alger and quickly picked it as a Bets On, noting that she was an author I needed to keep an eye on. So I was quick to snag a copy of GIRLS LIKE US when it came into the office. The book is set in Suffolk County, New York, but the places we know and think of in the Hamptons are not the ones depicted here. Instead, we are on the other side of the tracks where life is a lot grittier than glittery.

THE LAST HOUSE GUEST by Megan Miranda (Psychological Thriller/Mystery)
THE LAST HOUSE GUEST reminded me once again how strong of a writer Megan Miranda is. The plot, you ask? Avery Greer is the townie in a Maine beach town who befriends Sadie Loman, one of the wealthy girls who summers on the island. On the night of an end-of-the-season party, Sadie is found dead on the beach, and all signs point to suicide. But that does not make sense to Avery, who commits herself to figuring out what went awry.

A NEARLY NORMAL FAMILY written by M.T. Edvardsson, translated by Rachel Willson-Broyles (Psychological/Legal Thriller)
A NEARLY NORMAL FAMILY by M.T. Edvardsson has been well translated from the Swedish by Rachel Willson-Broyles --- and it’s a complete page-turner. It is set in Sweden and opens at the end of summer with 18-year-old Stella Sandell having been accused of murdering Christopher Olsen, a man in his early 30s. From the start, she garners empathy from readers, mostly due to their age gap. If she is not the older adult in this scenario, how can she be guilty? But let’s face it, she is not a little darling; she’s a teen rebel. Could she have done it?

THE NEAREST EXIT MAY BE BEHIND YOU by Amulya Malladi (Fiction)
THE NEAREST EXIT MAY BE BEHIND YOU by Amulya Malladi is a fun, funny, brisk and smart novel that brings readers a sharp storyline, as well as a deep dive into the culture of global corporate politics. Many years ago, I read a few books by Amulya that I had enjoyed. So when this one got on my radar, I quickly requested a copy.
