Woodhaven Bookworms

Norma Pacl of Hermitage, TN is the spokesperson and moderator for "Woodhaven Bookworms." This lively group --- consisting of 10 women and 1 token male --- enjoys good food, good books and good conversation. In this interview, Norma describes how they’ve conducted their meetings for the past two-and-a-half years, shares some of their favorite reads and stresses the importance of staying open-minded and flexible during their monthly discussions.

Q: Does your group have a name and/or a theme? How long has your group been in existence?

A: Our book club's name is "Woodhaven Bookworms." We have been meeting for two-and-a-half years.

Q: How many members do you have? How many men, how many women? What age are most of your members?

A: We have 11 active members, 10 women and one token male, haha.

Q: How often do you meet? Where do you meet?

A: We meet once a month, at members’ homes.

Q: Do you eat at your meetings? What do you eat? Who brings the food?

A: Yes, we eat at our meetings. That's half the fun. The person who is hosting the meeting usually provides the food. The menu is usually something simple, consisting of something sweet, salty, or whatever the hostess chooses.

Q: Who leads the discussion? Do you use reading group guides?

A: I usually lead the discussion.

Q: What kind of books do you read?

A: We read popular fiction, some biographies and historical fiction.

Q: How do you choose your books? Do you choose one new book at each meeting, or do you choose the books for a number of meetings ahead of time?

A: We usually choose books a few months ahead of time. Someone will recommend a title, and then we vote on it.

Q: What were some of the best discussions or favorite books the group read?

A: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Widow of the South and The Memory Keeper's Daughter.

Q: How do you keep things fun?

A: That doesn't seem to be a problem for our group. We all love to laugh, eat and talk.

Q: What advice would you give to other reading groups?

A: Include everyone in the discussion, don't insist on your own format and be flexible.
